Go to the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden (Part II)

The Great Warrior of Montauban (Emile-Antoine Bourdelle)

He took a lot of piano lessons
But those brave paws at the keys
Might as well have been tossing potatoes.
He tried poetry -
Snapped his pens.
All the shimmering ribbons he would have liked
to pull from the air -
They melted in his earnest fat fist.
Well, if I must paint
with the slapstick gut of my foes
Carve a beautiful slice
in the air with my straight sword -
Oh God, your only gifts to me -
these rippling muscular snake sinewed
colossally ungovernable
hands
